We look forward to spring for many wonderful reasons, one of the most enjoyable being the annual Georgia Wine Highway Weekends. These are the perfect pairings of tastings and beautiful drives, and they’re happening in 2016 on the last two weekends in March.
Georgia has a rich and long history in wine. Back in 1900, it was the fifth largest producer of wines in the nation. However various laws and prohibition put the brakes on the business, which really didn’t return until the 1980’s. Now the state is awash in growers and producers, many in the northern mountains. To celebrate and promote its wine, the Georgia Winegrowers Association designates special times during the year where wineries open their doors to visitors for special tastings. This year the Wine Holiday Weekends boast 21 participating wineries, five of which are located nearby Lucille’s. These include four located in the Cleveland, GA area:
Cenita Winery. The newest of the local wineries produces a selection of three reds, two whites and a rose.
Serenity Cellars. A family-owned boutique winery, it’s known for Old World-style wines.
Yonah Mountain Vineyard. This large and well-respected winery has Georgia’s only known wine caves.
Cottage Vineyard Winery. Offers beautiful 360-degree mountain views and a selection of 11 wines.
Also on tour is Habersham Vineyards in Cleveland, one of Georgia’s oldest wineries, producing award-winning varietals.
To participate, all you need to do is buy a Passport—your ticket to admittance at each winery—pick up your complimentary wine glass and map out your route. You can purchase your Passport and begin at any of the participating wineries, and we’ll be happy to help you with directions.
