Enjoy Mardi Gras Bavarian-Style In Helen, Georgia

There’s more than one way to celebrate Mardi Gras, and up here in the mountains, we do it Bavarian-style at an annual event called Fashing, held this year on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

In Germany, Fashing season technically begins the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, giving everyone plenty of time to create masks and costumes for the big celebration on the night before Lent begins. Helen, Georgia carries on this spirit with a less elaborate—though no less energetic!—evening of feasting dancing and merriment.

Costumes are encouraged for the fun event, which is held at Helen Festhalle, and prizes will be awarded in best overall, female and male categories. A live German band will provide music. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are provided and a cash bar is available as well.
