A Georgia Mountain Original: Grandaddy Mimm’s Moonshine

The era of bootlegging is long behind us, but the legacy is alive and flowing at Grandaddy Mimm’s Moonshine Distillery in Blairsville, Georgia.

A mason jar filled with a cocktails and two maraschino cherries on a toothpick.Jack “Mimm” McClure was an Appalachian legend in the mid-20th Century. A noted local philanthropist, he made moonshine and bootlegged from the Depression era until his death in 1969. It’s his authentic recipe for corn whiskey that’s now being distilled and bottled by Grandaddy Mimm’s Moonshine Distillery.

The company makes several varieties of moonshine, including Mule Kickin’ High Octane 100 Proof, the flagship of the line, made the same way ol’ Jack did. There’s also a 140 proof version—not for the timid drinker! Other varieties include 40 proof fruit-based moonshine: Apple Brown Betty, with all the flavor of Granny’s homemade pie; Fresh Peach Cobbler; Wild Cherry Cobbler; and soon to come, Blueberry Cobbler. True to the nature of the products, packaging is nothing fancy. The liquor comes in mason jars, done up with a checkered label, like something that was canned in the kitchen.

Guests can take a short tour of the distillery, learn about the history of moonshine and the company, and then enjoy a tasting. If you want to forgo the tour, you can still taste up to five of the company’s products for $5.
